The care you give your garden this fall can determine how successful it is next year. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, you’ll learn tips and techniques that will get your outdoor garden off to a happy, healthy start in 2022…and ensure your indoor plant companions continue to thrive

ONLINE CLASSES are 1-1/2 hours each and include How-To presentations, handouts, and plenty of time for Q&A with speakers.

  • Preparing Your Home Garden for Winter: It's that time of year again! Time to prepare new beds, rake, cut back, weed, divide, clear debris, mulch, and protect your established and newer plantings from winter damage. In other words, another beautiful autumn in New England! There’s no guarantee that Winter 2021-22 will be as kind as last year. Learn now how best to prepare your garden to weather the challenges of the coming season.

  • Shrubs, Trees and Fall Pruning: Once the weather cools off and assuming the soil is still warm enough for root development, fall can be an ideal time to plant a variety of shrubs and trees. Learn the steps you need to take to ensure new plantings overwinter successfully and wake up healthy and happy come spring. This lecture will also cover which shrubs can be pruned in the fall and how to do it. (Hint: In many cases, fall is NOT the right time to prune, but late winter is.)

  • Composting: Put simply, composting is a method of recycling, using microorganisms to decompose organic matter into usable, highly nutritious soil. You can compost in your backyard, under your sink, and even in commercial settings. All it takes is the “recipe for composting success,” an open mind, and a desire to help the environment by reducing waste.

  • Houseplant Success: As with our outdoor gardens, many things can go wrong when you grow plants indoors. Learn the factors that make for happy houseplants, including light, water, and temperature requirements…and how to provide them. Common houseplant pests and diseases are also on the agenda, as well as how to treat them.

WEBINAR INSTRUCTORS are senior Master Gardeners who are both experts in their topics and trained gardening educators:

  • Gretel Anspach – A Master Gardener since 1998, Gretel is a retired engineer with a passion for both the art and the science of gardening. Her MMGA Speakers Bureau repertoire includes a wide range of practical topics. She is also the volunteer manager of a food pantry garden serving Marlborough and Maynard.

  • Kathi Gariepy – A Master Gardener since 2000 with over 10,000 MMGA volunteer hours under her belt, Kathi is a founding member of the MMGA Speakers Bureau and has presented to hundreds of organizations. Her talks are known for their eye-popping photographs.

  • Bonnie Power – A trained zoologist with a deep interest in ecological issues, Bonnie has been a Master Gardener since 2016 and a serious outdoor/indoor gardener most of her life. As an Admin for a popular "sick houseplant" diagnostic group on Facebook, she knows whereof she speaks when it comes to growing beautiful plants inside.
